What is SHENAIR?

The Shenandoah Valley Air Quality Initiative (SHENAIR) is a collaboration of local governments, universities, and interested citizens focused on characterizing air quality and providing sound scientific information to local decision makers to support air quality policies in the region.

SHENAIR project is managed by the Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission (NSVRC), coordinating research efforts conducted by the University of Virginia (UVA), Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, and James Madison University  in fulfillment of NOAA grant number NA06NWS4680009. SHENAIR was developed in phases.  Phase I was completed on December 31, 2007 and Phase II completed July 31, 2009.  A final report will be issued by October 29, 2009 to NOAA. SHENAIR researchers focused efforts to characterize air quality in the Shenandoah Valley and approaches to working with local governments in facilitating awareness of air quality conditions.

Phase II Science Program Investigations included:

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) data compilation

Pollution Transport and Source Models

VT researchers ran CMAQ models and predicted air emission sources and the        effectiveness of instituting local controls to reduce air pollution.

Asthma Model and Air Mass and Back-Trajectory Climatology Asthma Alert System

UVA computed and analyzed regressions on the demographic information for the Shenandoah Valley to relate demographics to respiratory admissions.

Dissemination and Forecast Capability

Emergency response program to respond to the Valley’s capability to respond to airborne hazardous scenarios.

Truck Idling Assessments and Recommendations

JMU has conducted an analysis of the full-fuel-cycle effects of idling reduction (IR) technologies in collaboration with other research investigators. It incorporates direct impacts at the truck and upstream energy use and emissions estimates from the GREET model with published climate and vehicle operation data.

Assessment of Various Air Quality Application Models and Systems

JMU (CATTs and HPAC)

Local Government Committee Coordination, Telecommunications and Data Exchange

Northern Shenandoah Valley Regional Commission administers periodic Local Government Committee meetings to provide local jurisdiction review of SHENAIR science program findings.  For information on LGC meeting agendas and minutes, contact Ms. Jill Keihn.
